Storm-Damaged Solar Panel Salvage in India
A guide for solar plant owners, EPCs, O&M teams and authorised representatives preparing a damaged module lot for assessment or transfer.
What should I record before offering storm-damaged solar panels?
Start with the site location, approximate count by visible condition and whether modules are still installed. Identify who can approve transfer. If the incident is part of an insurance or warranty claim, confirm applicable inspection, evidence and release requirements before arranging pickup.
Record condition before discussing a rate
Use separate inventory rows for glass damage, frame damage, signs of water exposure, visibly intact but untested modules and unknown condition. Record make, model or technology where available. Label each count or weight as measured or estimated. List inverters, cables and mounting equipment separately.
Use existing labels, photos and incident records. The qualified site team should direct access, electrical assessment and handling. Damage can be hidden, so a visually intact panel needs appropriate assessment if reuse is being considered. See the IEA PVPS extreme-weather report and the lot inventory workbook.
Confirm who can release the lot
Record the asset owner and who is authorised to approve release. If there is a claim, ask the insurer and any appointed surveyor what the applicable policy requires for inspection, photos, counts and salvage. Confirm in writing which material may be released, by whom and when. Check relevant warranty, financing and contractual terms separately.
Agree the destination and pickup terms
Ask the proposed receiving business to identify the facility, the condition groups it accepts, exclusions and the evidence of eligibility relevant to that material and activity. Agree who arranges and pays for qualified removal, packing, loading and transport, how final quantity will be checked, and which receipt or processing records the receiver will provide.
For material assessed as waste, see the CPCB e-waste portal and solar PV guidance and Chapter V of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. Use the handover checklist to record the agreed responsibilities.
What two public auction notices show
| Original notice | What the auctioneer published |
|---|---|
| Parola, Maharashtra · 30 Oct 2026 | 205 modules with rain and storm damage. Reserve of ₹2,02,000 before GST. The notice listed an inspection window and described the photos as indicative. |
| Bap, Rajasthan · 21 Sep 2026 | Reserve of ₹2,500 each for 14 frame-damaged modules. The same notice required the buyer to lift 702 glass-damaged modules at ₹500 each. Both rates excluded GST. |
These notices show how inspection, condition groups and lifting obligations can change the scope of an offer. See the India Solar Module Auction Brief and compare two offers after costs.
