Xpogen Circular — India's First Automated Solar PV Recycling Plant

India has 100+ GW of solar installed. Zero automated recyclers.

Xpogen Circular is building India's first automated c-Si solar panel recycling plant with integrated silver recovery. Taloja MIDC, Navi Mumbai. Capacity: 500 kg/h to 1 tonne/hour.

India's solar waste crisis is already here

India has installed over 100 GW of solar capacity — the world's 3rd largest. Panels last 25–30 years. The first generation is reaching end-of-life, creating thousands of tonnes of waste annually. By 2050, IRENA estimates 4.4 million tonnes of cumulative PV waste. There is no automated recycling solution in the country.

100+GW
Installed Solar
3rd largest solar market globally. 280–300 GW targeted by 2030.
4.4Mtonnes
Waste by 2050
IRENA projection. Waste accelerates sharply from 2030 onwards.

Automated Recyclers
No operational automated c-Si panel recycler anywhere in India.
2034
EPR Mandate Year
Mandatory recycling targets under E-Waste Rules begin FY 2034–35.

The opportunity is immediate, not regulatory. Silver recovered from one tonne of pre-2015 panels (₹2,00,000 at conservative pricing) exceeds total acquisition and processing cost (₹99,765). Regulation is a bonus — not a prerequisite.

8-Stage Material Recovery Process

Automated mechanical separation followed by hydrometallurgical silver extraction. No thermal treatment. No combustion emissions.

500 kg/h – 1 TPH Silver: 500 kg/day input 3–4 workers/shift ~340 kW total power
01

Panel Intake & XRF Testing

Continuous

Panels received, weighed, and tested via handheld XRF to estimate silver content. Lots below 0.7 kg/T silver are rejected.

02

Junction Box Removal

>99% removal

3D scanning identifies J-box position. Automated blade system removes single and triple configurations. Panels 1000–2400mm × 800–1300mm.

03

Aluminum Frame Removal

>98% Al purity

Servo-driven hydraulic system separates frames from all standard sizes. Frames conveyed to scrap bin for direct sale.

04

Glass Milling & Classification

85–95% recovery

Infrared-heated milling cutters separate front glass from EVA laminate. 3-layer vibrating screen classifies glass by particle size.

05

Shredding

50–70 pcs/hr

De-glassed laminate (EVA + silicon cells + copper ribbons + backsheet) fed into single-shaft shredder. Output: 3–5cm pieces.

06

Grinding to Powder

500 kg–1 TPH

Shredded material ground to ~20 mesh powder via water-cooled grinder, liberating metal particles from plastic/silicon matrix.

07

Air & Electrostatic Separation

>95% separation

Airflow separator recovers 95–98% of metals. Double-roller electrostatic separator performs final metal/plastic split. Copper purity >95%.

08

Silver Recovery (Hydrometallurgy)

99.9% Ag purity

Silicon powder enters 3×1000L HNO₃ reactors → filter press → NaCl precipitation → borosilicate reduction kettle. Output: 99.9% pure silver.
