What to Do With Solar Panels After Repowering in India
Plan what happens to the outgoing modules before the removal schedule is set. An inventory by block or phase makes it easier to agree which groups can go where and when.
What should I do with panels removed during repowering?
Confirm who can approve release, record the modules by group, and agree what evidence each receiving route requires. Plan dispatches by batch and retain the count or weight and receiving acknowledgement for each one.
What should I record before removal?
Build an inventory by block, phase or module group. Record the site and district, approximate quantity, make and model where available, installed status, known condition, existing test or fault records, and the expected release window. List inverters, cables and mounting equipment separately if they are part of the enquiry.
Use existing records and photos. The qualified site team should manage electrical work and physical handling. Start with the lot inventory workbook.
Can removed solar panels be reused?
Some modules may be candidates for reuse depending on condition, technical assessment, intended use and applicable requirements. Record intact-looking or formerly operating modules separately from tested modules and visibly damaged stock. Agree the evidence required with the assessor and the receiving party. For material being sent as waste, verify that the destination can accept that material for the proposed activity.
How do I plan a staged handover?
- Before releasing a group. Confirm ownership and release authority, and check whether contracts, warranties or financing terms affect transfer.
- Before each dispatch. Agree the recipient, batch date, count or weight basis, packing, loading and transport responsibilities, and what happens to rejected material.
- At receipt. Match the lot ID and the dispatch quantity with the receiver’s written acknowledgement. Retain any required processing evidence separately.
Use the handover checklist to keep these records together. The NSEFI and SolarPower Europe India guidance, the CPCB e-waste portal and the IEA PVPS second-life modules report provide more detail on handling and assessment.
Can I enquire before modules are removed?
Yes. Share the district and state, approximate count or weight, planned release window and your role. Xpogen can clarify the lot details and coordinate follow-up with potential receiving businesses. The project team arranges qualified removal and agrees receiving and transport terms with the relevant parties.
